Ontic and Epistemic Descriptions of Chaotic Systems

چکیده

Traditional philosophical discourse draws a distinction between ontology and epistemology and generally enforces this distinction by keeping the two subject areas separated and unrelated. In addition, the relationship between the two areas is of central importance to physics and philosophy of physics. For instance, all kinds of measurement-related problems force us to consider both our knowledge of the states and observables of a system (epistemic perspective) and its states and observables independent of such knowledge (ontic perspective). This applies to quantum systems in particular. In this contribution we present an example which shows the importance of distinguishing between ontic and epistemic levels of description even for classical systems. Corresponding conceptions of ontic and epistemic states and their evolution will be introduced and discussed with respect to aspects of stability and information ow. These aspects show why the ontic/epistemic distinction is particularly important for systems exhibiting deterministic chaos. Moreover, this distinction provides some understanding of the relationships between determinism, causation, predictability, randomness, and stochasticity in chaotic systems.

Comparing uncertainty data in epistemic and ontic sense used to decision making problem

In the paper aspect of comparability alternatives in decision making problem by imprecise or incomplete information isexamined. In particular, new definitions of transitivity based on the measure of the intensity preference between pairsof alternatives in epistemic and ontic case is presented and its application to solve decision making problem is proposed.

An Action Description Language for Iterated Belief Change

We are interested in the belief change that occurs due to a sequence of ontic actions and epistemic actions. In order to represent such problems, we extend an existing epistemic action language to allow erroneous initial beliefs. We define a nonMarkovian semantics for our action language that explicitly respects the interaction between ontic actions and epistemic actions. Further, we illustrate...

Can Classical Epistemic States Be Entangled?

Entanglement is a well-known and central concept in quantum theory, where it expresses a fundamental nonlocality (holism) of ontic quantum states, regarded as independent of epistemic means of gathering knowledge about them. An alternative, epistemic kind of entanglement is proposed for epistemic states (distributions) of dynamical systems represented in classical phase spaces. We conjecture th...

Basic Elements and Problems of Probability Theory

After a brief review of ontic and epistemic descriptions, and of subjective, logical and statistical interpretations of probability, we summarize the traditional axiomatization of calculus of probability in terms of Boolean algebras and its set-theoretical realization in terms of Kolmogorov probability spaces. Since the axioms of mathematical probability theory say nothing about the conceptual ...
